This seaside town at the south-east point of the district of Barisal closes the door of the Sundarbans and offers visitors a long sandy beach of 18 km. Much more preserved and authentic than its victor's Bazar, it offers a soothing stop, between coconut and azure blue. But this cannot last, because hotels grow like mushrooms along the beach. Kuakata was founded by a Rakhine tribe at the end of the th century. From Rakhine to Burma, they fled here to escape mughal persecutions. The Rakhine dug wells (kua in Bengali) that gave their names to the village. One can still see some on the outskirts of the Buddhist beach and temple.
