The castle of Vyborg is a unique testimony to the medieval defence architecture of the region. Built by the Swedes in the 1290s, it ensured the defence of the Kingdom of Sweden and its maritime activities on the borders of Karelia. A coveted strategic location, destroyed, modified and rebuilt, taken and lost many times by the Finns and Russians, it finally fell to the Russians in 1945. From the Saint-Olaf tower, the panorama on Vyborg is splendid.
