Built between 1933 and 1935 in the then Finnish town of Viipuri by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, the library is now a landmark building in the now Russian town of Vyborg following the Soviet-Finnish war (1939-1940). Recognised as an important modernist work by the architect, it was restored throughout the 2000s, a long process completed in 2013 but which has enabled it to regain its former lustre
