In 1846, a group of Dutch people left their homeland to find a land of asylum offering better conditions. They settled on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in 1847 and founded Holland. Today, this thriving city showcases this heritage and promotes Dutch culture with attractions such as Windmill Island Gardens and Nelis' Dutch Village, the Tulip Time festival, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors every spring, and the Dutch Winterfest, which celebrates the holiday season. For gourmets, there's the seasonal Holland Farmers Market and New Holland Brewing.
