Founded in 1706, Chestertown is the capital of Kent County and has approximately 5 200 inhabitants. Thanks to its key location on the banks of the Chester River, it became the second-largest merchant port of Maryland in the middle of the th century behind Annapolis. With this status, the city quickly enriched itself before a decline in favour of Baltimore. However, its historic centre retains the remains of this prosperous period, and Chestertown remained famous for its rich Georgian architecture dating from the late 1700 s. The city is also known for the Chestertown Tea Party, which took place in May 1774, an event that the inhabitants are renovating each year at a festival attracting nearly 15 000 people.
