Between them, the neighbouring villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown have a population of just over 20,000. They are so small that it is easy to walk from one to the other. Moreover, Sleepy Hollow, long considered as North Tarrytown, only adopted its own name in 1996. It is here that The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and his headless horseman, ghost of a soldier beheaded by a cannonball during the war of independence that haunts the place, was born. You can visit the author of this famous short story, Washington Irving, who is buried in the city's cemetery.
