Port Royal is the work of a certain Colonel Joseph Mackey, founder of the now defunct Mackey Airlines. Considering this small corner of South Bimini particularly suitable for the construction of second homes, he acquired a property there in the 1950s, before buying a modest 38-hectare parcel in 1958, which he devoted to real estate development. Canals, a church, a gas station and a shopping center were soon created. A few decades later, the second homes gave way to a hotel complex with a marina. Today, the Bimini Cove ensures the succession and welcomes hundreds of visitors.
