The provincial capital lies on the equator. Twice a year, at the passage of the equinoxes, you'll stand on your shadow. The city was built by Syarif Abdurrahkan Alkadrie in 1771, who established his sultanate here. A port city of over 658,000 inhabitants, Pontianak nestles at the mouth of the Kapuas delta, Indonesia's longest river, facing the South China Sea. Pontianak is a cosmopolitan city where several ethnic groups live in harmony. The Chinese, Malays and Dayaks are the main ones. The rest of the population is made up of Bugis, Bataks, Menangkabau, Javanese and Arabs. A number of religious monuments are scattered throughout the city, including the Vihara Bodhisatva Karaniya Metta and the Masjid Abdurrahman.
