Ocean Springs is the old Biloxi (Old Biloxi), the place where the French colony of Fort Maurepas was founded by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville in 1699. His current name was given to him in 1854 by a city doctor who believed that local sources had curative qualities. The fort, destroyed in the th century, was designed to defend the French Louisiana coast overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The replica replica on the historic site, severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, was replaced by a public park.Today Ocean Springs is a very quiet small town, including the main streets, Washington and Government Avenues, are beautiful arteries, with numerous shops and restaurants. The visit not to be missed is the Walter Anderson Museum of Art, which showcases the works of Walter Anderson (1903-1965), a famous painter who lived in the city. Every year, on the first weekend of November, the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival is held. A festival in memory of one of the brothers of Walter, who was also a great artist who died in 1984 and whose pottery can be admired, among others, at the Sherwater Pottery.
