TABO MONASTERY

Tabo is known for its Buddhist monastery, the oldest in the Spiti valley. Founded in 996, this ochre-colored complex houses 9 temples in which one can admire superb wall paintings and stucco statues dating from the ^9th, ^14th and ^15th centuries. You will also see 23 chörtens, the room of the monks and that of the nurses. In the morning around 6 am, you can attend the puja which takes place in the new monastery. The ceremony lasts about 1 hour. 15 km from Tabo, the Gyu Gompa contains an intact 500 year old lama mummy. Impressive!
