Quiet and polite place that used to be a place with a weigh house and then a jazz and theater club
The square was originally built around a 16th century weighing house where all goods imported into Antwerp passed through to determine the customs tax. The merchants had their warehouses built all around it. But with the expansion of the city, it was moved outside and the building burned down in 1873. In the 1960s, artists took over the disused premises to make a club for jazz, experimental theatre and endless nights, but in the 1990s it was rehabilitated as a quiet, policed square.
