DIAMOND SQUARE MILE

Simonstraat and Lange Kievitstraat are the two main roads in the Jewish quarter, which together with Hoveniersstraat form the diamond district. The whole industry is rather discreet, but nearly 10,000 people work in the sector. Most of the activity takes place in Pelikaanstraat, in the shadow of the railway embankment, where the diamond exchange is located. The reason for their presence here is the railway station, from which the majority of customers disembarked at the beginning of the century.
