13th century castle on the Scheldt, the oldest building in Antwerp, home to the statue of Semini and The Antwerp Story
Le Steen is the 13th-century castle on the banks of the Scheldt. An integral part of the old city walls, it became a prison in the Middle Ages before being enlarged under Charles V. It is the only building on the waterfront still standing, and the oldest building in the town. Under the vaulted entrance, you can see the crouching statue of Semini, the Scandinavian god of youth and fertility (you can recognize him by his two sexes!). Since its reopening in 2021, the castle has been home to The Antwerp Story: 11 surprising rooms reveal the history of Antwerp.

Un imposant château au bord de l'Escaut. Mérite un détour lors d'une balade sur les quais du fleuve.

A small part of this castle through the ages since the 13th century. Stroll around this monument is very pleasant. The interior is occupied by the national museum of the marine.
