Europe's first stock exchange, built in Antwerp in 1531, later became an art academy and public library
Antwerp is home to Europe's first stock exchange, built in 1531. Sir Thomas Gresham, financial adviser to the King of England, visited the place and proposed the construction of such a building in London (now the London Stock Exchange). The Stock Exchange later became an art academy and then the city's first public library. The Gothic ceiling dates back to the reconstruction of the 19th century following the multiple fires that destroyed a large part of the building.
