Palace built in 1750 for Johan Alexander van Susteren and which belonged to the Belgian royal family after the revolt of 1830
Built in 1750, the Meir palace is a building that reflects the splendour of that era. The wealthy merchant Johan Alexander van Susteren, who made his fortune in Ostend, had it built by the Antwerp architect Jan Pieter van Baurscheidt de Jonge. Napoleon bought it in 1811 and had it furnished to his taste. During his exile on the island of Elba, his rival Alexander I of Russia lived there, before being dislodged by William I when the Kingdom of the Netherlands was created. It finally belonged to the Belgian royal family after the revolt of 1830.
