Lónsöræfi's magnificent and unspoiled nature extends along the eastern edge of the Vatnajökull glacier, between Hvalnes, the «whale of the whales» to Mount Snæfell on the high plateau. In this mineral vastness there are some secret valleys, surprising vegetation oasis. The deep steep gorges were carved by glacial torrents in the crystal clear or coloured rhyolitic like the Reyðarártindur and Hvannagil. Beware, difficult track, get informed before you venture.
