This museum, housed in a renovated former farmhouse, brings together objects from the excavations
This ancient seigneury dating from the 12th and 13th centuries is recognized as a Historic Monument "under reconstruction", after having been classified as a "ruin" for a long time. Here's an overview of the work undertaken by the association: electrification, securing the site, fitting out the former kitchens and the 11 rooms and gardens that can be visited. The 3-post room, which has kept its spiral staircase and fireplace, now houses a permanent exhibition on vine and wine. This reminds us that in 1900, Mâlain boasted over 100 hectares of vines. While a large part of the walls and a few rooms, such as the dungeon and chapel, remain from the 12th and 13th centuries, most of the remains date from the late 15th century.
On the way up to the château from the parking lot, turn left and explore the grotte du trou du diable, the site of the discovery of human bones over 17,000 years old, on display in the village museum, also run by the Groupe Archéologique du Mesmontois. Housed in a renovated former farmhouse, the 3-storey museum features a significant selection of objects from the excavations, as well as important ethnographic, geological and mineralogical collections.
Finally, as you leave the village in the direction of Ancey, the Gallo-Roman city of Mediolanum is a real curiosity that can only be visited during scheduled events (see agenda). In season, the castle is the setting for theatrical performances, concerts and family events.
