Travel Guide Volcan Mahawu

At the Tomohon bus terminal, take a mikrolet towards Rurukan. Ask to be stopped at Gunung Mahawu (signposted on the left of the road). A stone and dirt path leads upwards for 2 km. It can also be taken by motorcycle. Then a path leads to the summit in 10 minutes. From here, views of the sea, the fumaroles of Lokon and the lush plantations on the volcano's fertile slopes. In the crater, a sulphurous pond is a reminder that the volcano is still active. On the way back, there are very few mikrolets heading for Tomohon. Expect to cover the distance on foot (allow 40 minutes downhill to Tomohon terminal).
