A mecca for scuba divers, it's a thriving city with a population of over 450,000. Here, people speak Bahasa Melayu Manado, a Malay language characteristic of Manado. In a very relaxed atmosphere, on Sundays the city center is abandoned to cyclists, who now stroll through the heart of a silent city. For walkers, few historic monuments remain standing after the 1844 earthquake and the American and Javanese bombardments. However, there are still some 300 places of worship (cathedrals, mosques and Buddhist temples).
