Refuge around fresh and brackish water marshes providing habitat for shorebirds and some fish species
This refuge offers a unique opportunity to observe local flora and fauna. It has nearly 73 square kilometers of fresh and brackish water marshes, bald cypress forest and bayous, for example. The refuge's marshes provide habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl, as well as critical spawning and nursery habitat for some freshwater and saltwater fish species. They also help protect local communities from storm surges.
