Throughout the western part of Bugesera, on the side of the Kanyaru River, which marks the border between Burundi and Rwanda, the passage between the two countries is strictly impossible. Indeed, positions in Kanyaru-Bas and Kanyaru-Haut, in the northern part of Ngozi, up to Cohoha Lake in the northern part of Kirundo province, the absence of bridges and the presence of impassable marshes prohibit any crossing to Rwanda. But in the far north of the country, the border crossing of Gasenyi, between the eastern shores of Cohoha and the western edge of Rweru, has become the capital crossing point between the two countries in recent years. Indeed, the manual of the RN 14 connecting Kirundo to Kigali via Gasenyi in 2009 completely reconfigured the Burundi-Rwanda bonds. From Bujumbura, the vehicles now prefer to go through this rather than Kayanza and the Frontière-Haut border crossing, because the quality of the road is better, and Kigali is less far away by this route.
