Ruyigi is the capital of Buyogoma, a beautiful mountain mass at rounded peaks (1 800 -2 m) which occupies much of eastern Burundi. Exceeding the 20 000 inhabitants, the city has continued to grow in recent years, despite geographical congestion due to its physical location, at the top of the Mpungwe Mountains (Buyogoma), and the devastation of the war.The landscapes surrounding the locality are magnificent, like the surrounding area, between the mountains dug and bourrelées of the Buyogoma and platitude of the savanes of the Kumoso. The city itself, very provincial, is built according to the administrative and religious logic that has presided over its European creation and is suitable for its status as a provincial head-place. It is the seat of a large diocese and the offices of the province and the hospital of colonial architecture is distributed around the side roads. As elsewhere in the country, a modern market was recently built through an international aid program. One of the strengths of the community is also that it belongs among its inhabitants Marguerite Barankitse and its protected, engaged in an experiment of banale solidarity, contrary to many simplified ideas on the borders of human nature. If Ruyigi can be known in Burundi and abroad, it owes it to actions undertaken for years by «Maggy» in the framework of its association «Shalom».
