Mersin, a large port city, owes its name ("myrtle" in Turkish) to the shrubs that grow along the coast. Separated from Anatolia by the Taurus mountain range, it is located in the fertile Çukurova valley, which supplies part of Turkey with fruits and vegetables. Mersin was inhabited by many civilizations - the Hittites, the Persians, the Romans - as evidenced by the ancient sites. Today, it is a very pleasant seaside resort with its large avenues lined with palm trees. Its hotels, its markets and its almost tropical climate in summer make it a good base to enjoy clean beaches and less touristy than in the west.
