7 km north of Iznik, you will find the small town of Elbeyli. Here you can visit the hypogeum(Yeraltı Mezarı), a5th century Byzantine burial vault decorated with wall frescoes. It was discovered in 1967. On the eastern wall of the hypogeum, two peacocks can be seen drinking from a double-handled canthar. If the kantharos, the monogram, the peacock's head were destroyed or looted, the frescoes survived thanks to important restoration works. It is necessary to ask for the keys to the museum. The accompaniment by an official of the museum is obligatory. Not far from there is an obelisk of the 2nd century. Ask the official to point it out to you
