The capital of the East, 685 km southeast of Ankara and 126 km northeast of Aleppo, Syria, Gaziantep is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It is the 6th largest city in the country. It spreads over a vast fertile plain where vineyards and olive trees grow. It is known as the world capital of pistachio(Antep fistiği), with which the best baklava in Turkey is made. Gaziantep is one of the leading exporters of manufactured carpets in the world, and is among the top 10 cities in the world in terms of economic growth. Artisans working with mother-of-pearl-encrusted copper can be seen in front of the bazaar stores. Gaziantep combines tradition and modernity with its old stone houses and large shopping and pedestrian streets. On February 6, 2023, two particularly violent earthquakes hit Turkey. Gaziantep was severely hit. The information we have given for this city was established a few weeks before the earthquake. At the time of writing, some of it may unfortunately no longer be appropriate.
