Located just under 40 km from Monroe and easily accessible by Routes 165 or 139, the small town of Bastrop has a population of less than 10,000. In fact, its population has been declining for several decades now and the trend does not appear to be reversing. Once a Confederate stronghold during the Civil War, it offers little in the way of attractions these days other than a museum dedicated to local history, the Sydney Museum and Art Center. North of the city, following Route 425, the Chemin-A-Haut State Park and its bayou Bartholomew are a small haven of nature that deserves to be discovered if you are in the area.
