Located about 60 km south of Shreveport, it is a small town of just under 4,500 people. It is known for the Battle of Mansfield-Pleasant Hill during the Civil War in 1864, which resulted in a Confederate victory. A national historic site is dedicated to the cause, the Mansfield State Historic Site. The city is also home to the Mansfield Female College Museum (free admission), the first college for women west of the Mississippi River, opened in the 1850s by the Methodist Church. During the Civil War, it served as a hospital for wounded soldiers.
