In the middle of the Thar Desert, Barmer has a population of 100,000. Since the discovery of oil in the region in 2009, it has become a major refinery center. It is now reputed to be one of the most expensive cities in Rajasthan. The old town of Barmer seems oblivious to recent developments and has a quiet, serene air. Few tourists venture here. If you visit Barmer, you'll receive a warm welcome and hardly have to negotiate prices. There are no tourist stalls here, only authentic products from the surrounding villages. You'll find some beautiful embroidered fabrics and ribbons. The town is also renowned for its leather and woodwork. It also attracts pilgrims for its temple dedicated to the goddess Jagdamba and the Jain temple Chintamani Parshvanath.
