NAHARGARH FORT

Less spectacular than its neighbors, the "Tiger Fort" is worth the trip for its magnificent view of Jaipur which it overlooks. Jai Singh II decided to build it in 1734, in order to protect his new capital. A legend reports that the works would have disturbed the soul of a rathore prince, who died formerly on these glorious grounds. A special ceremony had to be performed to appease the spirit of the dead man. The fort has a graceful baori (stairwell) and a small palace, built in the 19th century for the wives of Ram Singh II. Empty of all furniture, it has retained some murals and stained glass windows.

According to a legend, Jai Singh II had the Kachhwaha treasure buried in the fort of Nahargarh. He would have entrusted the guard of it to Meena warriors, the ethnic group which formerly occupied the site. After his accession to power, each maharaja had the right to see this treasure at least once. A Meena guard had to lead him into the secret room, blindfolded. The rumor would have even interested Indira Gandhi's tax department. During the 1970s, greedy officials would have proceeded to excavations, in vain.

Nahargarh at sunset. The visit of the fort is ideal at the end of the day. The site is accessible until 10 pm and you can sip a drink at the cafeteria located on the wall. From there, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Jaipur and the setting sun. In high season, the site is very crowded, so it is better to come early.
