The State of Santa Catarina offers privileged sites for the observation of marine mammals. We used to hunt them. Today, they are protected and studied. Since 1982, trained by Dr. Payne, the project's scientists have been cataloguing and studying mammals. The best time to see whales in the area is the second half of August and the first half of October. The Baleia Franca project works for the protection of cetaceans and can be visited throughout the year (centro de visitantes).
