GISAKURA TEA PLANTATIONS
Certainly one of Rwanda's finest experiences for tea lovers. Visitors will learn the entire timed process of tea making, from plucking the leaves to packing before shipment to the trading centers. Avoid Sundays, the day off, to see the pickers at work. The rolling countryside, with its many shades of green and blue skies, is quite simply unique. The workers pick the tender tea leaves and fill large wicker baskets that they carry on their backs. Open to tourists, and although every hour spent in the fields is a precious part of their working day, they can take the time to chat and take a few photos. The transformation process is no less interesting (you'll learn the difference between black and green tea, both of which come from the same plant), not to mention the unavoidable tasting stage! Other tea plantations in Rwanda can of course be visited, but those of Gisakura, Nyungwe and Gisovu remain the main ones and certainly the most beautiful. An excellent, highly instructive visit for the whole family. The coffee plantations are not to be outdone, and this is also the region where you can visit production cooperatives and washing stations, particularly around Gisenyi. In both cases, it's best not to arrive unannounced: the visit must be organized in advance.
