This building made of sandstone without mortar is a national historic monument located 12 km east of Melo. Built from 1854 by two Basque masons, Juan Etcheverry father and son, the house was used as a stopover for stagecoaches traveling from Montevideo to Río Branco. Today it houses a museum. Don't miss the stone bridge built in 1856 over the Chuy River, which was once subject to a toll. In 1871, the area was the scene of an important battle between the supporters of General Flores and the governmentalists of Cipriano, who suffered a humiliating defeat in less than thirty minutes.
