Site very frequented by the Burmese, Kyaikkami can be seen in the distance with its red roofs. It is the object of many pilgrimages since Mawlamyine. Buses leave from the central market at 6am and 7am. Yele can be reached by a jetty, between two wooden monasteries on stilts that project into the water. One is dedicated to the monks and the other to the nuns. Or by going down to the beach, through a crossing at water level. The Monks tell that the pagoda would have run aground on the rocks, a long time ago. On the island, the sanctuary is clearly divided into two rooms, one of which is forbidden to women. Legend has it that a woman approached the shrine and a storm would have devastated the area immediately. Since then, beware of offences! In the room reserved for men, Buddha sitting on a naga contemplates the representations of his predecessors, among men.
