The history of Burma has not always been simple and peaceful. And everyone carries within them a duty to remember. 60 kilometres south of Mawlamyine is one of the two allied cemeteries to be seen in lower Burma. The second one is on the road to Bago. It is not a most enjoyable visit, but it is unfortunately part of Burmese history... The graves of the prisoners of war, who died during the construction by the Japanese of the "death railway", which was to link Burma to Thailand, are lined up impeccably, often carrying a photo of the victim. Open every day and all day long, the entrance is of course free. There is also "The Death Railway Museum", which tells the story through the reconstruction of a train that can be taken for a twenty-minute ride along the river.
