Palmer was an area where the Athabaskan and Dena'ina peoples lived before an entrepreneur Gorge W. Palmer settled and built a post house. The town, 45 minutes from Anchorage, is now home to nearly 6,500 people and has a few points of interest that are worth a stop. Palmer is a bit of a remote residential suburb of the economic capital and many people make the morning and evening commute every day. The Glenn Highway, which runs from Palmer east to Glennallen, follows the Matanuska River to the Matanuska Glacier, one of the most easily accessible glaciers in the region.
