One of the newest national parks, this 45,000-hectare area of rugged terrain, culminating at over 2,000 m, is home to large mammals such as elephants, rhinoceroses, wildcats and, for enthusiasts, the famous Cape vultures. Without a 4 x 4, you can only take the single Krantzberg trail, which climbs over 1,000 m in both directions. If you want to take full advantage of Marakele National Park, you'll need to allow 4 hours in all, taking time to enjoy a picnic at the top. It's a superb experience on a clear day, when the view is completely unobstructed.
