Seen from the air, the city is only a dot in an ocean of mangroves and swampy plains. Quelimane looks like a small provincial town that tries, in vain, to have some charm. Some colonial buildings remain, like the old Nossa Senhora do Vibramento cathedral from 1785. But the whole city is dominated by the 1970s Salazarist style, with fewer buildings over ten stories high. It seems as if it is fossilized. In fact, the city seems to be literally falling apart. No other city in the country has so many ruined buildings in its center. Two buildings, diametrically opposed to the north and south, miraculously escape this spleen: the recent cathedral and the municipal swimming pool.
