This area of more than 1,500 km², a sanctuary of nature in its wildest state, is the very example of a reserve that is almost on the verge of extinction and for which, slowly but surely, steps are being taken to ensure its future. If today it is possible to see a large number of birds and a few groups of buffalo, it was not always so. In 1981, there were 46,000 buffalo in the reserve, a number reduced to 2,000 in 1999. War, famine and poaching have caused the destruction of the herds. Today, the reserve is open all year round, but the best time is during the dry season between April and October.
