The last stop before reaching Taravao and the Peninsula, Papeari was home until a few years ago to the famous Gauguin Museum, unfortunately closed for renovation work that it is not known if it will ever be completed. The visitor can visit the Harrison Smith Botanical Gardens. The 18 hectares no longer have much in common with the 137 hectares of exotic plants that the American professor, passionate about botany, planted in the 1920s, but the site remains pleasant. The commune is home to the Restaurant Bar of the Gauguin Museum, an institution; its co-founder Roger Gowen was awarded the National Order of Merit in 2018!
