Arue is a town of about 10,000 inhabitants and is mainly an industrial and commercial area. Residents are familiar with the Carrefour supermarket or the Brasserie de Tahiti, which produces the famous Hinano! However, it is also a historical site: the Pomare royal family used to live here, hence its name: Arue means "praise". Indeed, the inhabitants used to greet Pomare I with an appropriate "Arue i te arii". Its sheltered bay also attracted many sailors, including the North American writer James Norman Hall and Marlon Brando. The beach of the tomb of King Pomare V is quite busy at weekends: little sand but it is possible to swim there.
