A peaceful commune in the north of the island, Mahina has a population of almost 15,000 and is home to several remarkable natural sites, including Matavai Bay and Point Venus, where James Cook's first expedition landed to observe the transit of the planet in the spring of 1769. Mahina is also the starting point for the hike to Mount Orohena, although this is reserved for very experienced hikers. The first European ascent dates back to 1953, and there has been no refuge or signposts since then! The panorama from the summit is grandiose, it allows you to see as far as Huahine. Before it, the beautiful area of the "Thousand Springs" serves as a water catchment.
