York's small city (less than 200 inhabitants), founded in 1691, was the scene of the most important battle of the American War of Independence. From September 28 to October 17, 1781, General Charles Cornwallis's English troops were facing attacks by the American insurgents and French soldiers who supported them. General Cornwallis's capitulation after 21 days of fighting had a decisive impact on the end of the war. As a result of this huge setback, the power of London changed hands to the benefit of peace supporters and the American Independence War soon ended. The city now lives entirely around this glorious past: it has been rebuilt and preserved in the same way! In addition to visiting the city, its tricentenaires houses and its exhibitions around American independence, it is possible to go to the battlefield, or to witness demonstrations of artillery fire, in front of the tents of the reconstituted Camp Continental camp. In 2015, Yorktown was the first step in America's trip to the replica of the frigate Hermione, after crossing the Atlantic. The original ship took the Marquis de La Fayette in America in 1780 to support the insurgents.
