PALÁCIO DO PLANALTO
A glass building designed by Oscar Niemeyer, with a broad white concrete roof supported by a series of inverted columns
One of the key achievements of architect Niemeyer and urban planner Costa is, of course, the heart of the executive branch in the new capital of the Federal Republic of Brazil. The Palácio do Planalto (Palace of the President of the Republic) is a glass edifice under a broad white concrete roof, supported by a series of inverted columns. Oscar Niemeyer's juxtaposition of right angles and curves produces a striking plastic effect. This is undoubtedly a sign of power and modernity. The warrior statues were sculpted by Giorgi.
