CACTUS GARDEN
Botanical garden with nearly 1,420 species of cactus from Africa, America and the entire archipelago
This garden is interesting for botanical enthusiasts and for everyone, where you will discover all the names of the cacti thanks to the labels placed in front of each plant. Its structure in the form of a volcanic stone amphitheatre, and its emblem, an oversized cactus, were designed by César Manrique. Nearly 1,420 species of cactus from Africa, America and the Canary Islands are planted here, as well as other species such as the prickly pear or tunera. In the past, the fig harvest was one of the most important in Lanzarote, as it attracted the cochineal beetle(Dactylopius coccus) whose carmine colour, once dried, was used to dye fabrics. In the cactus garden you can also see the old windmill that was used to crush corn to make flour and then gofio. There is also a restaurant with a nice terrace overlooking the garden. You can continue to admire it while sipping a refreshment, as the place offers all sorts of drinks, including fresh fruit smoothies, which are quite delicious. Or by tasting some of the many homemade tapas or papas arrugadas with their green and red sauce. And for the hungry, ham croquettes, tortilla or fresh yellow melon. Finally, we won't leave without visiting the small stone shop where we can easily find souvenirs, including cactus seeds to plant at home.
