Lost in the middle of the Amazon jungle, some 200 km south of Paramaribo, Palumeu was born of the coming together of several Amerindian communities into a single village. This was due to the opening of an airstrip after the end of the Second World War. Hitherto isolated, the inhabitants of the surrounding area (mostly black-maroons and Amerindians) were thus able to benefit from a gateway to the capital. Although they can now travel to the city for supplies, the villagers have not abandoned their traditional way of life (hunting, fishing and farming), adding a little tourism to the mix.
