The Wia-Wia nature reserve, located in the Marowijne region and created in 1966, covers an area of 360 km2 to the west of Galibi, close to the Maroni River. Here you'll find a nesting beach for sea turtles, some species of which are in danger of extinction. Unfortunately, the turtles haven't been around much for some time now: the beach has been eroded away, but the reserve is still worth a visit, especially because of the many birds to be seen, especially those of the coast and marshes, including the well-known but still majestic and unforgettable red ibis(Eudocimus rubber).
