Basilica dedicated entirely to the Virgin Mary, depicting episodes from her life.
The basilica, built between 1854 and 1872, the year Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, is the work of architect Ruprich Robert. What makes it special? Its decor, entirely dedicated to the Virgin Mary, depicts episodes from her life. The statuary was created by the sculptor Leharivel-Durocher, and the stained-glass windows by Maréchal and Champigneulle. Opposite the basilica stands the Tour d’Argentan, a vestige of a 12th-century fortification.
