Located in the extreme south-eastern part of the Grande Île, the town of Manantenina and its surroundings are prized for their mineral resources of bauxite, a lateritic rock rich in iron oxide and alumina Al2O3, the main minerals making up aluminum. An exploitation project, initially entrusted to the company Aziana, was finally handed over in early 2015 to the Indian company Thankys Export. The town on the east coast of Madagascar has a population of around 20,000. The town is also considered as the Pole of coastal development, for its assets on fishing, its tourism potential, its underground and forest wealth.
