FORT AGUADA
Fort located on the northern tip of the Mandovi river estuary, whose main fortifications are still intact
On the northern tip of the Mandovi river estuary, Fort Aguada was completed in 1612. The main fortifications are still intact and extend south to Sinquerim beach. Seventy-nine cannons protected the estuary from invaders from the Arabian Sea. Built in 1864, its lighthouse is the oldest in Asia. During the Second World War, the fort housed German prisoners. Previously free of charge, foreigners now have to pay a prohibitive entrance fee. Below is the Aguada complex.
