In the heart of Bridgetown, the "Carénage" is actually the mouth of the Constitution River in Carlisle Bay. It was the combination of this natural shelter for ships and its location on the bay that helped Bridgetown develop. In the past, the Carénage was a place of intense maritime activity, where merchant ships (for goods or slaves) and fishing boats came to sell their goods, be serviced or repaired. Today, it's a marina where you can enjoy watching the pleasure boats moored there.
